Literacy Connections
It's
amazing how something as simple as a travelling teddy bear can
make so many connections to literature. My Travel Teddy provides a
world of
opportunities for the creative teacher or parent to make literacy
connections. After all, some of the most famous literary works are
based on the metaphor of the journey. The Epic of Gilgamesh, perhaps
the earliest known example of literary fiction, dates back to the 26th
century BCE. From the 8th century BCE we have the story of the Greek
hero Odysseus, or Ulysses from the Roman myths, which uses the journey
as a means to inform, instruct and entertain. Sir Gawain and the Green
Knight is from the late 14th century and again the journey is
central to the development of the character. Mark Twain, a great
traveller himself as well as a riverboat pilot, used travelling on
the river to develop the plot in Huckleberry Finn. Perhaps a more
direct connection to My Travel Teddy is Goldilocks who travelled to the
house of the Three Bears. By having your students take part in My
Travel Teddy they will be joining a rich tradition of writing that is
motivating and unlimited. Here are some ideas that might interest you.
